Promotion
The World Record Club (WRC) first announced the upcoming release of this album on page 2 of their Feb./March 1969 edition of World Record News.
In the same edition, WRC attempted to get on the front foot regarding the inclusion of "pop" repertoire into what had been, up until that point, a classical and light-music club. Indeed, WRC went to great pains over the length of near 18 months to calm their members who perceived that the inclusion of "mod pop" music would dilute availability or access to quality classical albums. WRC had to balance promotional material over those years so as not to contribute to that perception. That made it hard to promote pop albums such as Magical Mystery Tour, or those by The Yardbirds, The Hollies etc but they largely got around it by appealing to 'crossover' artists such as The Seekers and even, to a degree, Johnny Farnham. The irony being that the club got a lot of new members thanks to the very same members who were worried about its demise!
Magical Mystery Tour was very heavily promoted in the June'69 to May'70 Programme, as the following extracts show.
