GENERAL ALBUM INFORMATION
Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg was released in Australia by Festival Records on its 'catch-all' Interfusion imprint, through licence agreement with US-based Double H Licensing Corp on behalf of Lingasong Ltd, England. Released four days after EMI's The Beatles At The Hollywood Bowl, Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg would largely ride the coattails of the extensive promotion that EMI (Australia) afforded their live album, which they went to great extent to emphasise as "Beatles approved", loosely implying that Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg wasn't. One advantage of the Festival Records release was the price: $9.99 for two records as opposed to $6.99 for EMI's single record offering. Another selling point for Festival Records was the broader hype surrounding the 'lost tapes' and 'unreleased tracks'. Ultimately, the album spent 9 weeks on the charts, reaching #24.

Labels on initial copies reproduced the copyright error for the track 'Kansas City' by omitting 'Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey'. This error was the result of an oversight in EMI UK's copyright department dating back to 1964, when the track first appeared on Beatles For Sale. It was only uncovered 11 years later, in 1975, when Venice Music—the US publisher for Little Richard's 'Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey'—noticed a reference to the track in the book All Together Now: The First Complete Beatles Discography 1961-1975 [Michigan: Pierian Press, 1975]. Emphasising the error was the fact that 'Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey' actually ran for six seconds longer than the title 'Kansas City'!

After lengthy settlement negotiations, EMI UK corrected the error on reissues from early 1977 (EMI (Australia) followed suit when reissuing Rock 'N' Roll Music as two budget volumes in 1981, notwithstanding dropping a 'Hey' from the title, but they would never correct the title on the Beatles For Sale LP or Beatles For Sale (No 2) EP). Lingasong informed Festival Records of the correction in June 1977 and thus pressings from around July include the corrected title, although the sleeve was never updated. See label page for examples.

The album started an avalanche of similar reissues over the ensuing years, with Telmak's 1982 Historic Sessions being one of the more notable of the vinyl era. Please visit the "Historic Sessions" page for information on that release.
