Overview
Released in Australia in 1983 as ROCK 4, The British Pop Collection was a joint EMI/PolyGram project, manufactured by EMI Manufacturing Pty. Ltd. and marketed by EMI Retail Promotions. Promoted as “60 Original Artists — 60 Original Hits”, the three-LP boxed set offered a broad retrospective of the British pop scene, combining beat groups and rock acts with solo singers, instrumentalists and entertainers.

The selection placed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Animals alongside Cilla Black, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard and Petula Clark. Its interpretation of British pop also embraced overseas performers associated with the British scene, including Jimi Hendrix, The Seekers and The Easybeats.

‘She Loves You’ opens side one, giving The Beatles a prominent position at the beginning of the collection. The same side includes Joe Cocker’s version of ‘With a Little Help from My Friends’ and Peter and Gordon’s ‘A World Without Love’, extending the Lennon–McCartney connection beyond the group’s own recording.

The Beatles’ contribution was not retained when the collection was reissued on CD in 1989 as Axis CD ROCK 4. ‘She Loves You’ was replaced by Herman’s Hermits’ ‘My Sentimental Friend’, although the Lennon–McCartney compositions performed by Joe Cocker and Peter and Gordon remained.

The box included a folded four-page insert with artist biographies and photographs. Compilation and sleeve-note credits named Alex Coroneos, Bruce Ward, David Baxter and Rex Barry, while the packaging acknowledged Top Forty Research for chart information and Reader’s Digest for photographs.

The collection reached No. 8 on the Australian albums chart in December 1983.
