Overview
Released by EMI (Australia) in 1982, 2WS Greatest Memories brought together 18 recordings associated with Sydney radio station 2WS and its “Greatest Memories” programming. Compiled and annotated by the station’s Music Director, Gary Hoffman, the album combined British and American favourites with Australian recordings by artists including The Twilights, The Masters Apprentices, Daddy Cool and Spectrum. Hoffman explained that the selection reflected songs played since the station began broadcasting in November 1978, although licensing restrictions prevented some intended choices from appearing.

The Beatles’ 'She’s a Woman' opens side one, while The Rolling Stones’ 'Honky Tonk Women' opens side two. The sleeve notes promoted their inclusion together as a “world first”, claiming that permission had not previously been granted for a Beatles recording to appear on an album containing a Rolling Stones performance. Hoffman celebrated obtaining that approval as a particular distinction of the compilation.

Of particular interest to Beatles collectors, 'She’s a Woman' appears in true stereo, a mix still relatively uncommon internationally in 1982. Its inclusion continued Australia’s early access to the stereo recording, first issued locally on Greatest Hits Volume 2 in 1967.

Two further Lennon–McCartney compositions appear on side two: 'Dear Prudence', performed by Doug Parkinson in Focus, and 'A World Without Love', recorded by Peter and Gordon. The album places The Beatles’ music alongside the wider repertoire of familiar singles that formed the station’s nostalgic programming.
