Overview
Issued in Australia in 1980 as Polystar 9198 493, The Golden Years 9 formed part of a numbered series revisiting earlier popular recordings from the PolyGram catalogue. Its selection included Eden Kane and Lesley Gore, with The Beatles represented by 'Cry For A Shadow', the third track on side two.

Recorded in Hamburg on 22 June 1961 during the sessions with Tony Sheridan, 'Cry For A Shadow' predates The Beatles’ EMI recording contract. Jointly written by George Harrison and John Lennon, the instrumental drew on the guitar-led sound of The Shadows. Its appearance reflects PolyGram’s ownership of the group’s early Hamburg recordings, which supplied the Beatles material available for compilations in this series.
