Overview
Contrary to popular belief, this “EP” was not actually sold as an EP, at least insofar as EMI UK’s marketing was concerned. To use EMI UK’s own terminology, it was “an extended single” and “a pair of 45rpm discs”. Indeed, the masters were catalogued in EMI’s singles series, and the two discs were therefore pressed in both the UK and Australia—the Australian discs being pressed from UK-supplied mothers—with standard silver-and-black single labels rather than yellow-and-black EP labels. The public nevertheless applied the EP moniker and it stuck, perhaps so firmly that when EMI (Australia) re-pressed the stereo set in the early 1970s, it used EP labels, at least on disc one.

The locally produced, fully laminated sleeves were printed by Z. Nosek & Co using its new gatefold-capable machinery, which had been installed only a few months earlier. Slightly smaller than their UK equivalents, the Australian sleeves were prone to laminate lifting along the spine. Separate sleeves were manufactured for the stereo and mono issues, although from late 1969 excess mono sleeves were used for stereo copies, with a standard black-and-white [S STEREO] sticker applied over the mono catalogue number—see example image on the stereo page. All copies contained the stapled booklet with blue lyric sheet.

This was the only EP released in Australia that did not survive into 1978. Owing to the complexity of its packaging, the mono edition was deleted from the catalogue in 1969 and the stereo edition in 1973, with subsequent copies imported from EMI UK.
