Although coloured Beatles records had appeared overseas during the late 1970s, Australia did not receive a locally manufactured coloured-vinyl Beatles release until 1987. EMI (Australia)'s reluctance to embrace what it regarded as a manufacturing gimmick meant that, when it finally entered the coloured-vinyl market, it had to turn to Festival Records for help. The resulting red Sgt. Pepper's, grey-white White Album and yellow Yellow Submarine have since become distinctive Australian Beatles collectables—and, as former Festival mastering engineer Warren Barnett recalled, producing them was not always as straightforward as their colours might suggest.
