Released 3 May 1982 Original recommended retail price: $9.99
Released in May 1982, Reel Music brought together songs from The Beatles’ five films, with the Australian edition cut from UK-supplied tapes using Maxicut and packaged with an imported 12-page souvenir booklet.
Uncoated gatefold sleeve; includes 12 page booklet but not the inner sleeve
Overview Reel Music revisited The Beatles’ film recordings, but its Australian edition again demonstrated how overseas artwork and local mastering could follow different routes. Although a Capitol logo appeared on the rear sleeve, EMI (Australia) used British production master tapes and issued the album on Parlophone.
That choice affected 'I Should Have Known Better'. The Australian LP retained the standard 1964 stereo mix, with its harmonica interruption, rather than Capitol’s revised 1982 version with the introduction repaired. The records also appeared on black Parlophone labels, the long-serving orange design having been retired only a month earlier.
The package included an imported, American-printed twelve-page “Souvenir Program”, but no special inner sleeve. A front-cover sticker announced “Includes 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET” and carried the catalogue number. Click the sleeve image above to view the inner gatefold.
Otto Ruiter mastered the album at Studios 301 using Maxicut. It spent five weeks on the Australian charts, reaching No. 56.
Its catalogue life appears to have been relatively brief. The album was reportedly deleted within a few years, and no copies have been identified with the EMI Music Group—Australasia label wording introduced in 1987.
